James Spader’s Stint on ‘The Office’ Ending Soon

After just one season — and, let’s be honest, not all that many actual appearances — on The Office, James Spader is “leaving the company.”

Spader, who plays Sabre CEO Robert California on the NBC sitcom, will finish out his role this season but not return next season. It’s not an acrimonious split or monetary dispute, though — this was actually the plan.

Says executive producer Paul Lieberstein (aka Toby): “James always wanted this to be a one-year arc, and he now leaves us having created one of the most enigmatic and dynamic characters in television. He’s been a great friend to me and the show, helping us successfully transition into the post-Michael Scott years, and I’m grateful for that.”
