Character bio: Broadbent portrays the elderly John Bayley, Iris Murdoch’s long-suffering husband, whose love for his wife of 40 years was greatly taxed, yet remained deep and undying. Somehow he connected with Murdoch on an intellectual as well as spiritual plane, and while enduring her philandering ways as a young woman, he always knew she would come back to him–the one true love of her life. And as Iris grew sick with Alzheimer’s in her later years, their relationship became even closer as the two were bonded together and dependent upon one another.
