DO IT TODAY: ‘American Idol’ Premiere

American Idol Premiere
(Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009)

Tonight’s episode will, of course, be devoted to those outrageous auditioners, some having no business being near a microphone and/or noise-polluting our living rooms. But as the season progresses, you’ll notice that the show itself was the recipient of a little nipping and tucking. First of all, those horrible (and personally, our least favorite Idol feature) audition episodes? Expect fewer hours alloted to that. Idol is also reverting back to half-hour results shows, plus, a bump in the number of semifinalists — from 24 to 36. But what’s arguably the most exciting new Idol edit is the addition of a new judge — a new female judge. Next to Paula Abdul, Kara DioGuardi, a big-time songwriter for Britney, Pink and more, will seem … thoughtful.
