DO IT TODAY: Denis Leary, ‘Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid’

Denis Leary, Why We Suck: A Feel Good Guide to Staying Fat, Loud, Lazy and Stupid
(Monday, Nov. 17, 2008)

It’s not about Rescue Me anymore, now Leary — nay, Dr. Denis Leary — is rescuing YOU. (If a fake-doctor-cum-celebrity condoning our “fat, loud, lazy and stupid” habits counts as rescuing … ) His smart, but savage musings riff on all things politically correct, what’s hypocritical, plus, the obese and the thin — care for an excerpt? “I’m sick of low esteem and fake fat-suit-wearing talk-show hosts and extreme makeovers and steroid-laden home run hitters and Reese Witherspoon movies, and Paris Hilton‘s himbo boyfriends and celebrity rehab and Dr. Phil.” Clearly, Leary is miffed. But he’s also joking. Like the chapter titled “Autism Schmautism” about how autism is trendy right now thanks to inattentive mothers. His diagnosis? Your kid is “just stupid. Or lazy. Or both.” But don’t worry, Jenny McCarthy! Dr. Leary says 100 percent of his sales will go toward the fight against autism. Or is that a joke, too?
