Justin Theroux and chat show host Jimmy Kimmel are producing a TV special in which comedians recreate classic scenes from old sitcoms.
The Leftovers actor and Jimmy Kimmel Live! host are teaming up to develop the currently untitled TV event for ABC. The special will pay tribute to classic sitcoms from the 1970s through to the 1990s and involve some of the “biggest names in comedy”, who will act out scenes from the old shows in front of a live studio audience.
“I spent most of my childhood in front of a TV set, obsessively watching comedies from great producers like Norman Lear, Jim Burrows, James L. Brooks and Garry Marshall,” Jimmy said in a statement.
“This is a way for a new generation of viewers to discover these classics and a new generation of actors to play characters they love, live in front of a studio audience.”
“Jimmy Kimmel has proven to be a preeminent voice in comedy,” ABC president Channing Dungey said in a statement. “Likewise, Justin Theroux’s versatile talents are showcased in every project he takes on. We are thrilled to be developing a new sitcom experience that will combine Jimmy’s mastery of live television and Justin’s irreverent sensibilities.”
Dungey announced the news during the ABC upfront presentation on Tuesday (16May17), when she gave an example of what viewers could expect.
“Think Kevin Hart saying, ‘What’chu talkin’ ’bout, Willis?'” she said, referring to the famous line from ’80s sitcom Diff’rent Strokes.
News of the show, which will air during the 2017-2018 season, comes shortly after it was announced Jimmy would be returning as Academy Awards host for the second consecutive year in March 2018.
