The Street Critic: Moviegoers Sound Off!

The return of Spike Lee‘s to the silver screen always causes a stir. There are those who want to see him do a full departure into mainstream filmmaking-and then are those Spike Lee Joint loyalists who are not too sure what to feel when they see a new work devoid of certain signature flourishes by their indie king director. Well with this week’s release of Inside Man, starring thespian luminaries Denzel WashingtonJodie Foster and Clive Owen, it seems to be apparent from a number of reviews that Lee will be satisfying both his audience and new converts–who may not even know, this time around, who is the helmer behind the thriller. Given the genre, casting and budget Inside Man could have been assigned to a number of directors. Fortunately we get to see it done though the eyes of Spike Lee which always emits his sensibility and incorporates edgy racial tensions, one way or another–albeit loudly, or more on the subtle side.

Chances are the crime thriller will have a fierce battle with V for Vendetta, which will probably still reign at the box office. But with Larry the Cable Guy: Health InspectorStay Alive and a nod to another indie king, Steve Buscemi and his new Casey Affleck and Liv Tyler starrer, Lonesome Jim, there’s an array of pickings at the box office–whether you’re a mainstream lover, an indie-goer–or someone caught somewhere in between.

Let’s see what some curious moviegoers are headed to this week:
