Warhol Exhibit Opens at MOCA

As David Bowie‘s song “Fame” played over the crowds at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, a projection of Warhol’s iconic 1964 Self-Portrait looking down on the beautiful people made it clear. Despite the pop artist’s famous pronouncement on everyone’s inevitable 15 minutes of celebrity, Warhol’s fame has endured well beyond a mere quarter hour.

The scene in question was the opening night gala for MOCA’s new Andy Warhol Retrospective. The largest comprehensive exhibition to be mounted in the United States, the retrospective includes over 200 works from landmark series such as Elvis, Soup Can, Marilyn, Mao, Jackie and Self-Portraits.

Dennis Hopper, whose image from Blue Velvet was captured in oil on canvas by Warhol years ago, was the guest of honor at the event, sponsored by Jaguar and Angeleno magazine.

The star-studded party (Charlize Theron, Steve Martin, Diane Keaton, Marisa Tomei, Courteney Cox and David Arquette, Patricia Heaton, Portia de Rossi, Kelly Lynch, Julian Sands and Stephen Dorff, to name a few) featured go-go dancers wearing vintage fashions, black and white themed tables with neon Warholesque light box centerpieces, and Studio 54 disco music. Fifteen minutes certainly wasn’t enough to take it all in.
