Well, I guess Darren Aronofsky didn’t dump The Wolverine because of its science fiction elements. He’s going full nerd with this next project if he gets his way.
Well, full, old nerd anyway. The spec script is 15 years old and comes from a relatively unknown writer. Human Nature is like if Futurama was a whole lot more serious. Okay, well sort of. It’s about a man who is cryogenically frozen only to wake up in a world where humans are basically pets to another species. So it’s like Futurama and Planet of the Apes, minus the one-eyed, purple haired lady and plus some non-ape alien species? Since there’s so little information, I’m going to stick with that for now.
What we do know is that George Clooney wants in on this picture as well. Vulture reports that he’s attached himself to star in the film as the cryogenically frozen man. It’s still undergoing budgeting, but as long as nothing goes awry, we’re looking at Aronofsky’s next big thing.
To be honest, I think this is a good move for the visionary director. As much potential as a Wolverine movie under his direction has, I’m not sure it’s the best way to follow up a film like Black Swan. The buzz around that film really brought him to the forefront of people’s minds for the style he’s worked so hard to cultivate and while The Wolverine would just make his name bigger, I’m not sure it would be for the right reasons. Taking on a more creative project like Human Nature that can offer him the freedom that his earlier films have and with a big name like Clooney it’s likely to get some decent attention.
