‘Heavy Rain’ Adaptation Coming Via ‘Deadwood’ Writer

Heavy RainIn another example of Hollywood types just-not-getting-it, Deadwood creator/writer David Milch has been hired to adapt the video game Heavy Rain for a forthcoming feature. Now, I’m all for adapting video games into movies; the right video games, that is. You can’t turn everything into a movie and Heavy Rain is a perfect example of why not. Heavy Rain doesn’t have swords, fireballs, dragons or any other fantasy elements. It’s based in the real world, but not like Grand Theft Auto’s “real world” in which you can take a tank down the streets of New York City. It follows four people who try to solve a murder mystery and the plot unfolds like a “Choose Your Adventure” children’s book, in that subtle choices can have a major effect on the plot later in the story. And since a movie would only be able to deliver a sole storyline, this just seems like a really dumb idea (though the film could unfold multiple plots simultaneous, but hundreds of student films have proven those do not work. AT ALL.). If you want the interactivity of the story, JUST PLAY THE GAME. It’s not that hard and a PS3 can double as a Blu-ray player. Jeez Hollywood, step up.
