ABC Pilots ‘S.H.I.E.L.D’: Joss Whedon to Co-Write, Possibly Direct

Joss Whedon S.H.I.E.L.D TV showAvengers: assemble! Now…freak out! (Just kidding, Avengers don’t freak out. Well, I guess unless you’re the Hulk.) According to Deadline, ABC has ordered a pilot for the Marvel TV-backed S.H.I.E.L.D, a live-action series from the king of the nerds, Joss Whedon.

The show is based on Marvel’s peacekeeping organization S.H.I.E.L.D (Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate), which was a featured plot point in Whedon’s film, The Avengers. While details of the show’s premise are scarce at the moment, one can imagine that it will include S.H.I.E.L.D director Nick Fury and perhaps the other fixtures, including Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk, and Thor to stop the evildoers of the universe from harming planet Earth.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. series is not so much of a surprise, though, as it has been in the works at Marvel TV and ABC Studios for awhile now. Additionally, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that it had signed an exclusive film and TV deal with Whedon that involved him writing and directing the Avengers sequel. And since Disney owns Marvel, it is no surprise that Whedon was able to dip into his wheelhouse for the project.

This also (excitingly) marks Whedon’s return to a medium he knows quite well, as he is the creator of cult favorites Buffy, The Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse. This is going to be a big one, you guys.

Are you excited for Whedon’s return to television? Do you think a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show will be amazing? Assemble your thoughts in the comments below.
