Matt Groening Outraged Danny Elfman with Bad Review

The Simpsons iconic score was almost never written–after composer Danny Elfman realized the cartoon’s creator, Matt Groening, once gave his music band a bad review.

Groening was a rock critic in his youth and on one occasion had to review Danny Elfman‘s former band, Oingo Boingo–but his review didn’t go down well with the celebrated film composer.

Groening says, “I used to be a rock critic many years ago. I once saw Oingo Boingo and I gave them a bad review. I outraged Danny Elfman so much that he actually wrote a letter to the editor of the paper.

“But when I did The Simpsons I wanted Elfman to do the score. And I thought, ‘He will never remember’–and he remembered. He has forgiven me now.”
