MTV, VH1, and CMT are going to air music videos again! But don’t get too excited. It’s only for one day. On July 4 the cable networks are turning back the clock and devoting their whole lineups to music videos for “Music Independence Day.” The idea is that it can be difficult for emerging artists to promote themselves in a very cluttered YouTubeVerse, so why shouldn’t networks ostensibly devoted to music help out? That’s why MTV will highlight artists like Justin Timberlake, Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Bruno Mars, VH1 will be all about Pink, Maroon 5, and Alicia Keys, and CMT will show vids from Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and the Avett Brothers. Exactly the artists who are desperate for exposure.
Okay, so that list of talent doesn’t exactly indicate that MTV, VH1, and CMT are trying to help emerging artists with “Music Independence Day.” Those big names will likely serve as a hook to lure viewers who then may stumble upon a newcomer. To that end the networks are actually allowing up-and-coming acts to create “artist profiles” on their websites to compete for a chance for their videos to appear on air.
