Researcher questions effects of TV violence and sex on kids

A researcher on the effects of TV sex and violence on children has warned that laboratory studies which indicate that children become more aggressive after watching violence on TV may be misleading. Marjorie Heins told the non-partisan media foundation Freedom Forum Tuesday that even if true, no “judgment about the long-term effects” of such programming can be gauged. She also argued that some “sexually explicit content” such as nude paintings and information about safe sex and birth control can be educational and valuable to young people but would barred to them under several Congressional proposals. Rather than resorting to censorship, Heins said, parents should “try to inculcate values” in their children.
