The CW Orders ‘The Originals,’ Renews ‘Hart of Dixie,’ ‘Beauty and the Beast’

Get ready for more drama on The CW this fall: The network today renewed its veteran shows Hart of Dixie and Beauty and the Beast and picked up a full season of The Originals, its spinoff of The Vampire Diaries. The shows join the already-renewed Supernatural, Arrow, and Vampire Diaries on the network’s 2013-2014 schedule.

“As soon as we saw last night’s episode of The Vampire Diaries, we knew we wanted more of The Originals — Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson have done a fantastic job with The Vampire Diaries, which is as fast-paced and well-written as ever, and Julie has created an equally compelling world for The Originals,” The CW president Mark Pedowitz said in a statement. “We’re also very excited to bring back Beauty and the Beast and Hart of Dixie for next season — both series continue to be creatively strong and compelling, and their fans are incredibly passionate. I’m very happy to have all three series on the schedule for next season.”

The Originals follows three fan favorite Vampire Diaries characters, the three original vampire siblings, as they return to New Orleans, the city they helped found. The spin-off episode earned 2.2 million viewers and a 0.9 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic, down 31 percent from TVD‘s average but still a solid performance for The CW.

Hart of Dixie is one of The CW’s best-performing shows online, while Beauty and the Beast won a People’s Choice Award for Favorite New Drama.

There’s still no word on the fate of The Carrie Diaries, the network’s critically beloved Sex and the City prequel, or Friday night spy action drama Nikita. The network will present its full 2013-2014 schedule to advertisers at its upfront presentation in New York in May.
