Kara DioGuardi Joins Jewel On Bravo’s ‘Going Platinum’

ALT TEXTAfter leaving American Idol after two seasons, Kara DioGuardi is heading back to the reality television world — and doing pretty much the same thing.

According to MTV, DioGuardi will serve as head judge on a new Bravo series — a songwriter competition tentatively titled Going Platinum. Singer/songwriter Jewel will host the show and help judge, along with a yet-to-be-named music executive and celebrity guests.

The show follows 12 musicians who compete in a series of songwriting challenges. Each week will feature different themes — from dance tracks to love ballads — that require the contestants to write and perform different genres. And the show will reveal their lives and personal drama, on top of their songwriting. The show was previously titled Hitmakers and will premiere in 2011 with 10 episodes. The winner will receive $100,000 cash, and publishing and recording deals with Sony, the Writing Camp, and RCA/Jive.

So basically, it sounds like a weird hybrid of American Idol and Project Runway. But regardless, DioGuardi seems pretty excited to be involved with the project.

“Hit songs are the backbone of the music industry, and as a publisher, nothing excites me more than finding new songwriting talent,” DioGuardi said in a statement. “I am happy to be a part of a show that helps up and coming songwriters pursue their dreams, while giving the public a look into the creative process.”

And honestly, even if you’re not a huge fan of the reality TV show genre (like me), this concept seems pretty interesting. We’re finally going to learn what exactly goes into making those crappy Top 40 songs that you never want to hear but are always playing in the background.
