Katie Couric Announces She’s Leaving CBS

katie couricKatie Couric has just confirmed to People magazine what we already knew — that she’s leaving her spot as the anchor of CBS Evening News in order to pursue other opportunities. She said, “I have decided to step down from the CBS Evening News. I’m really proud of the talented team on the CBS Evening News and the award-winning work we’ve been able to do in the past five years in addition to the reporting I’ve done for 60 Minutes and CBS Sunday Morning. In making the decision to move on, I know the Evening News will be in great hands, but I am excited about the future.” In terms of what specifically will become of Couric’s future, she said, “I am looking at a format that will allow me to engage in more personal storytelling. The bottom line is that I love doing all kinds of different stories. I have a lot of areas of interest and I want to be able to fulfill all of that.” Her explanation corresponds to many critics’ belief that the rigidity of reporting the evening news caused Couric to abandon her notoriously bubbly personality in favor of a more stiff persona, which then negatively affected the show’s ratings. But CBS isn’t necessarily washing their hands of her yet — Couric is reportedly in talks to develop her own talk show, which is still looking for a network to call its own. And quite honestly, good for her! Who would choose to continue reporting about gas prices in California when you can do a report about the best ways to teach your kids how to pack their own damn duffel bags for camp?
