A new musical version of beloved festive film A Christmas Story is to be turned into a three-hour TV special.

The 1983 holiday classic has already hit the stage as a musical and now network bosses at Fox are using both versions as the basis for an all new spectacular, which will air in December (17).

Marc Platt, the man behind last year’s (16) TV special Grease: Live, will oversee the project, which will feature new music from Oscar winners Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who wrote lyrics for La La Land’s City of Stars tune.

A Christmas Story chronicles the life of a bespectacled young kid, called Ralphie, as he attempts to persuade his parents to buy him a BB gun, while battling bullies, and a shopping mall Santa.

Meanwhile, Fox bosses have also announced plans to turn the musical Rent into a TV special. The Broadway hit recently celebrated its 20th anniversary.

Platt will also executive produce Rent, with the estate of the late original playwright Jonathan Larson.
