Idris Elba is to curate a week’s worth of programming for British online TV channel BBC Three.

Bosses at the British broadcaster announced on Wednesday (15Mar17) that the actor, musician and DJ had helped them commission new documentaries, dramas and comedies aimed at young people.

The week-long programming experiment, dubbed The Idris Takeover, will begin on 27 March (17).

“There’s a part of me in every aspect of this season; comedy, drama, documentary, sport all made by a truly diverse team both on and off screen,” the 44-year-old said in a statement.

The shows will appear on the BBC iPlayer streaming service, BBC Three’s YouTube channel and its website.

Launched as a digital channel in 2003, BBC Three became online only last year (16).

The channel’s controller Damian Kavanagh added, “Idris is passionate about giving opportunities to new and exciting talent, as is BBC Three. As well as being able to provide a platform to those on and off screen, we’re passionate about telling stories for young people, made by young people.”

Idris has successfully teamed up with BBC producers in the past, as his hit detective show Luther debuted on BBC One in 2010 and ran for four series.
