Netflix Loves ‘Arrested Development’ — A Fifth Season Is In the Works

Credit: Netflix

By now, you’ve had about as many arguments about the quality of Arrested Development‘s Netflix season as you can humanly stand. Whether you’re in the camp of rigid disappointment with or of steadfast appreciation of the fourth season of the cult sensation, you’ve defended your stance to all detractors ever since having watched all 15 episodes over that hermitic Memorial Day weekend. But there is no rest for those of us affixed either way on the Bluth family: Variety reports that Netflix is in talks to develop another season of the show.

Producer Brian Grazer is only beginning conversations about an additional line of Arrested episodes with Netflix, but CEO Reed Hastings has expressed interest in continuing his company’s relationship with the comedy.

The news likely sparks mixed feelings — we’re part excited, part apprehensive — considering the polarized reception of Season 4. The primary criticisms about Netflix’s slot of AD eps involved the highly convoluted timeline and delivery of the story (which seemed to lessen in severity as the season carried forth) and the absence of Arrested‘s ensemble chemistry, a result of the actors having to film scenes independently due to conflicting schedules. Hopefully a fifth season will be able to wrangle all, or at least most, of the Bluths in one room, because all fans agree that the true glory of the show comes from those family meetings. After all, what’s a “speech, speech, speech” chant if hardly anyone is there to not make a speech at the end of it?
