Ryan Murphy Has an Idea for a ‘Glee’ Spinoff, Puts It On Hold

Lea Michele Cory Monteith Finchel GleeSomething tells me Ryan Murphy needs to start playing his cards a little closer to the chest. He recently revealed that the reason for the premature announcement about Glee‘s fan favorites Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith leaving the show was that he was brewing a spinoff for the trio. With all the fan backlash, another executive producer on the show, Brad Falchuk told a rabid San Diego Comic-Con audience that the threesome weren’t actually leaving the show, just McKinley High. For now, it seems that spinoff plan is on the back burner and our three singers are stuck in Lima, Oh. with the rest of the gleeks.

Murphy went further to tell Deadline that he never flat-out removed Colfer, Michele and Monteith from the cast, but rather that he brought them into discussions for the spinoff which for many reasons never found a deal at Fox. If they had given the show the green light, Murphy was looking to place it in New York, likely at the Julliard School.

While it’s certainly an interesting idea, it’s a little difficult to pull off a spinoff even with folks and beloved as these three actors. Not everyone can be Private Practice. It makes sense that the trio would stay on Glee, but at the same time, what does this mean for their characters’ big city dreams? Will they be relinquished to Ohio to keep the fans happy?
