Who needs the Oscars when you’ve got the MTV Movie Awards?
The cable TV network announced their nominees today for the best of 2002’s films in a variety of quirky categories, including best kiss and best fight, with Spider-Man and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers topping the list with five nominations each, including best film.
“We plan on mounting the funniest, loudest, most high-flying show to date,” executive producer Joel Gallen said in a statement.
Joining Spider-Man and The Two Towers on the best film list were Barbershop, the thriller The Ring and 8 Mile, starring Eminem in his debut performance.
Of course, Eminem also snagged a nod for best actor, along with Spider-Man‘s Tobey Maguire, xXx‘s Vin Diesel, Catch Me If You Can‘s Leonardo DiCaprio and The Two Towers‘ Viggo Mortensen.
Best actress nominees included Kirsten Dunst for Spider-Man, Reese Witherspoon for Sweet Home Alabama, Halle Berry for Die Another Day, Kate Hudson for How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days and Queen Latifah for Chicago.
Maguire and Dunst made the list for the coveted best kiss trophy for Spider-Man. They’ll face off against Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner in Daredevil, Nick Cannon and Zoe Saldana in Drumline, DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz in Gangs of New York and Adam Sandler and Emily Watson in Punch-Drunk Love.
Best fight features the lightsaber contest between Yoda and Christopher Lee in Star Wars: Episode II–Attack of the Clones, Jet Li battling the Ultimate Fighters in Cradle 2 the Grave, Fann Wong against the Palace Guards in Shanghai Knights and Johnny Knoxville versus boxer Butterbean in Jackass: The Movie.
This year, MTV added a new breed of actor–one that only exists in the digital world. For best virtual performance, the nominees are Yoda from Attack of the Clones, Scooby-Doo in Scooby-Doo, Gollum in The Two Towers, Dobby in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and Kangaroo Jack in the comedy of the same name.
Nominees were chosen by viewer polls on MTV and MTV2. Reuters reports last year’s show was watched by over seven million viewers and was MTV’s most-viewed movie award show ever among audiences aged 12 to 34.
This year’s MTV Movie Awards will air on June 6.
