‘Weeds’ Creator Antes Up For Poker Series

Jenji KohanPoker series? But I barely know the series! Wakka wakka.

Apologies, folks. Anyway, Weeds creator Jenji Kohan and executive producer Matthew Salsberg have developed a new show for Showtime revolving around the world of Vegas gambling and poker. The comedy, titled Whales, follows a group of smart kids who think they can outsmart the casinos and poker tournaments and win the fat check in the end.

I want to like this show, I really do. But it sounds exactly like every television show and movie that has ever remotely had to do with poker. I mean, doesn’t this sound exactly like 21, but with poker instead of blackjack? Want it set out west? We’ve got Maverick. How about with British spies? Casino Royale. Want it on ESPN? We got Tilt. Oh yeah, I did my research on this one.

The series will start off great and follow the same pattern for the next season. Then it will start to wobble a little bit by the third season and by the fourth season it will be a completely different show. By the fifth season, the stories will be so unbelievable and the characters will be stretched to caricatures of their former dynamic selves. The minor characters we loved in the first few seasons will either be written out or kept around for no logical reasons. But we’ll keep watching it while the show flounders around. Thanks Showtime!
