MacGruber
Starring: Will Forte, Ryan Phillippe, Val Kilmer
Directed by: Jorma Taccone
Opens May 21, 2010
Forte takes his recurring SNL sketch to the big screen as the mullet-coiffed soldier-of-fortune known as MacGruber, a parody of the cheezy ‘80s TV series MacGyver. This modestly-budgeted comedy pits the astonishingly handy hero against his archenemy Dieter Von Cunth (Kilmer), an ingenious terrorist who has stolen a nuclear warhead and intends to unleash it on Washington, D.C.
What We Think: The MacGruber sketches, which depended heavily on the comedic timing of Forte, are only mildly funny, and the film’s trailers don’t get us excited either. But the addition of the always entertaining Kilmer is definitely a plus (we’ll admit it: his character’s name makes us chuckle).
Cool to Know: This is the eleventh SNL sketch to be made into a film. The first was 1980’s The Blues Brothers; the most recent was 2000’s The Ladies Man.
