Leo Freaks Out in Frantic ‘Shutter Island’ Trailer

Last night the new trailer dropped for Shutter Island, the latest collaboration between Departed chums Leonardo DiCaprio and director Martin Scorsese. Have a gander at the clip and ask yourself: If this movie weren’t directed by the legendary Scorsese, would it not look like the cheesiest thing ever?

Peppered with snippets of melodramatic dialogue like “All I know is it’s a mental hospital … for the criminally insane!” and ominous shots of crazy old ladies, menacing inmates and pipe-smoking, bow-tie wearing physicians, the trailer makes Shutter Island out to be something of a supernatural/psychological thriller — a genre that doesn’t have the best reputation of late. Who knows, perhaps Scorsese is attempting some sort of radical deconstruction or something. If anyone’s earned the benefit of the doubt, it’s him. But watching Leo’s histrionics, it’s hard not to be reminded of Jim Carrey in The Number 23. And we all know how well that turned out.
