Created by comedian and actor Cole Escola, who originally played Mary in the production, the show offers a wildly comedic take on the days leading up to Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. In the play, Mary Todd Lincoln is imagined as a chaotic and frustrated woman who secretly dreams of becoming a cabaret star while living in the White House during the final days of the Civil War.

Maya Rudolph expressed excitement about joining the acclaimed production and stepping into such a unique role.

Ever since I was a little girl I have dreamed of being Cole Escola,” Rudolph joked in a statement. “Oh, Mary! is the funniest play I have ever seen… It’s such an honor to play the role of Mary, especially after so many iconic Marys have come before me.”

The production, directed by Sam Pinkleton, has quickly become one of Broadway’s biggest comedy hits. It made history at the Lyceum Theatre by becoming the first show in its 121-year history to gross more than $1 million in a week. Since then, the show has broken its own box office record more than a dozen times.

Oh, Mary! has already been extended on Broadway through January 3, 2027. The production has featured several high-profile performers in different roles over time, including Jane Krakowski, Tituss Burgess, and Betty Gilpin.
