Doctors and pharmaceutical companies are tangling over TV ads for prescription drugs, with the American Medical Association pushing for a ban on such ads and the drug companies countering with the claim that they empower patients, the New York Post observed Wednesday. The newspaper reported that the American Medical Association, which has been meeting in Chicago this week, had been set to vote on a resolution asking the FDA to outlaw the ads, until the organization was informed that only an act of Congress could do so. The physicians contend that the ads have created a “false demand” for the advertised drugs and increase the cost of health care because patients are prompted to ask for the advertised brands rather than generic ones.
