David Letterman to Oprah: Jay Leno Is ‘Funniest’ Yet ‘Most Insecure Person I Have Ever Known’

The friendly competition between late-night hosts Jay Leno and David Letterman is no secret. In fact, on Oprah: The Next Chapter, Letterman sat down with Oprah Winfrey to discuss just that.

The CBS Late Show host spoke with Winfrey about the long history he has with Leno, and offered up some high praise – as well as some unflattering things to say – about Leno.

“He’s an unusual fellow. I’ve never met anyone quite like Jay,” Letterman says in the interview. “And I will say — and I’m happy to say — that I think he is the funniest guy I’ve ever known. Just flat out, if you go to see him do his nightclub act, just the funniest, the smartest, a wonderful observationist and very appealing as a comic. Therefore, the fact that he is also maybe the most insecure person I have ever known… I could never reconcile that.”

When he was asked about being passed over for the Tonight Show gig, he denied any rivalry that resulted from that. “We were always friends before all of this happened,” Letterman says.
