Will Mindy Kaling Leave ‘The Office?’

Mindy KalingTo answer the headline’s question – of course she will, eventually. Everyone will, the show seems to be winding down. Do we have to have the talk about the pea plant in the cup again? Back to the topic – will Mindy Kaling leave The Office before the show officially ends? That could very well be a possibility she says in a new interview with NY Mag.

“This isn’t some big scoop or anything, but I can see this season being my last. Right now, I’m hankering for new adventures. Ninety percent of the time I’m having romantic-comedy fantasies in which I’m wearing little pencil skirts and hurrying down to the subway,” she said. With Steve Carrell officially leaving after this season, Kaling’s departure would leave an even bigger hole for the show to fill.

Kalings next move will probably align with her passion/obsession for romantic comedies. Her movie The Low Self Esteem of Lizzie Gillespie, is currently in pre-production and NBC has a deal with her to star in her own sitcom which she would also write.

In addition to portraying the always funny Kelly Kapoor, Kaling is a producer, writer, and director for the show. “Mindy has long been considered the best writer on The Office, and every actor on the show thinks she writes for them best,” says B.J. Novak (Ryan Howard), another triple threat (actor, writer, producer). She and Greg Daniels, co-creator of The Office, were nominated for writing the episode where Jim and Pam (finally) get married at this past year’s Emmys.

Kaling’s goal is to create the classic romantic comedy for this generation’s females. And with her eyes set on not on a Tina Fey-like influence, but Woody Allen, I think she’s the perfect candidate to bring the funny and heart back into romantic comedies.
