TV Review: “The Most Outrageous Game Show Moments”

Warning: While watching this show, have a change of clothes ready. This is one hour-long special that’s sure to make you pee in your pants. It’s really that funny.

We all know America has a weakness for game shows. They are an indelible part of our culture. And the first thing you need to know about the appeal of game shows is this: It’s not about the money. None of the best game shows are. It’s about watching how other people–people just like you and me–perform under pressure.

Many, many times, those people fail–and when they do, it’s HILARIOUS!

NBC, to cap off its 75th Anniversary celebration, has assembled an extraordinarily funny collection of clips from some of America’s favorite game shows for our amusement, calling it The Most Outrageous Game Show Moments.

Aside from the stodgy Jeopardy (although there is one foreign version bite), gaffes from all the major game shows, past and present, are represented, including: Wheel of Fortune, Family Feud, Password, Hollywood Squares, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, Weakest Link, Win Ben Stein’s Money, The Dating Game, The Newlywed Game and many more.

From the very first blunder–“Name a famous Willy.” “Willy the Pooh?”–the 60-minute gag-fest is sure to leave you gasping for breath. Another favorite of mine is the answer to “How long will your husband say his inseam is?”–“Seven inches.”

Hosts Peter Marshall (Hollywood Squares), Wink Martindale Tic-Tac-Dough), Bob Eubanks (The Newlywed Game), Jim Lange (The Dating Game) and Ben Stein Win Ben Stein’s Money) almost stay out of the way enough to let their previous work stand on its own merit.

The gem of the show is the program’s capper: the mythical, never-seen-before-on-network-television answer to the question about the most “unusual place to make whoopee.” Even 25 years later, the answer is still roll-on-the-floor funny.

Although airing Wednesday (at 8:00 p.m.), The Most Outrageous Game Show Moments is truly NBC’s must-see TV.
