Prepare yourself for the adventure of a lifetime because movie tickets for Avatar: The Way of Water are now on sale. Enter James Cameron’s land of Pandora for the second time in 13 years. Here is everything we know about the film to prepare you for when it hits theaters December 16.

What is Avatar: The Way of Water about?

In this sequel, we follow Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a decade after the events of the first film, who now raises a family in the beauty of Pandora with his wife Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). Their life seems to be bliss as they live without fear of danger. However, that all changes when an ancient threat returns. Now Jake, Neytiri and the community of Pandora must fight against these forces to keep their homeland and each other safe.

The cast

As we know, Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana make their iconic return. Who else will be joining them? And what new characters will we see?

Sigourney Weaver played Dr. Grace Augustine, who was the head of the Avatar program. Unfortunately her character died in the first film, when she sacrificed her life for Pandora. However, she’s returning, as a different character this time. She plays the adopted daughter of Jake and Neytiri.

Other cast members returning include Stephen Lang as the villain, Joel David Moore as Dr. Norm Spellman, and Giovanni Ribisi.

New characters we’ll see are diver Ronal (played by Kate Winslet), Tonowari (Cliff Curtis) and new commander General Frances Ardmore (Edie Falco). It’ll be interesting to see how these characters fit in with the new ones.

Do you have to see the first Avatar before watching Avatar: The Way of Water

I would recommend watching the first one before stepping into the new territory. If you don’t, you might get lost in the story. Also the first film is beautiful and gained so many positive reviews from fans and critics alike. At the end of September, movie theaters rereleased the first film so audiences could catch it before the sequel. If you didn’t get the chance to catch it then, you can stream it on Disney+.
