‘Sinners’ Dominates the Oscars With a Record-Breaking 16 Nominations

Ryan Coogler’s period vampire drama Sinners has shattered records at the Academy Awards, earning an unprecedented 16 Oscar nominations—the most ever for a single film. This surpasses the previous record of 14 nominations held by classics like All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land.

The film received top honors including Best Picture, Best Director for Coogler, and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan. Supporting acting nods went to Delroy Lindo, marking his first Oscar nomination, and Wunmi Mosaku, highlighting the film’s acclaimed ensemble.

Sinners also dominated technical and creative categories, with nominations for cinematography, costume design, production design, makeup and hairstyling, film editing, sound, visual effects, original screenplay, original score, and original song. Costume designer Ruth E. Carter earned her fifth Academy Award nomination, becoming the most-nominated Black woman in Oscar history.

The film was also recognized in the Academy’s newly added casting category, boosting its overall nomination total. At the box office, Sinners has grossed $368 million worldwide, making it one of the year’s strongest performing Best Picture contenders.
