Welp, Disney can’t get over Jack Sparrow.
Hitfix reports that, following the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides set to release on May 20, 2011, the studio is pushing for two more sequels following the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow — the role that will now evidently define Johnny Depp‘s career. The studio has been “quietly telling cast and crew to set aside a major block of time in the very near future.”
The Mouse House also plans to, like Pirates 2 and 3, shoot the films back-to-back as one giant movie — which is the same strategy that left director Gore Verbinski a broken man who, after barely finishing the films in time, disappeared for a spell (since, he’s returned to make the upcoming Rango). But anyway, there’s no word yet if Pirates 4 director Rob Marshall will take the reigns of the sequels, but if so, there’s a good chance we’ll see some behind-the-scenes footage of him curled up, in the fetal position, in the corner, crying.
Jokes aside, this whole sequel business is getting a bit ridiculous. Let’s be honest here. The first Pirates? Excellent. The next two? Ummm… Let’s just say they weren’t the greatest. Hopefully this second round of sequels manage to actually make the story more interesting, not just try to touch on every single pirate myth ever in a two hour period.
