This month, two of our editors are packing up their bags and heading to two very different destinations. Creative editorial director Taylor Barringer is set for the crisp fall weather of Paris, while photo editor Trish Halpin is packing plenty of SPF for the Florida humidity. Here, the two break down their very different makeup bag take alongs.
Taylor Barringer, Paris, France: “There’s a reason everyone raves about packing extra moisturizing products when you’re flying internationally: the air on the planes can suck all the hydration out of your skin. I like to take redeye flights when I’m heading to Europe so no one can see the mini spa I have set up at my seat. I wear an overnight mask from Koh-Gen Do with SK-II eye patches on the plane. I also make sure to spritz my skin with the Tatcha Luminous Dewy Skin Mist throughout the flight. Once I get to where I’m going (this time it’s Paris) I’ll make sure to use the Shiseido White Lucent Power Brightening Mask.

“I don’t wear much makeup when I’m traveling, but I do make sure my hair gets plenty of moisture. I also make sure to pack a candle that smells like home so I feel more comfortable. Diptyque makes their signature candles in travel size—thank god—so I stock up on my favorite scent, Baies. Other than that, I bring a light body oil (Caldrea Coconut Fig Leaf is my favorite for fall) and my favorite disposable razors, the Schick Hydro Silk. The actual razor is the same one used in the non-disposables and the affects last for days— they’re the best razors I’ve ever used. Oh, and I never, ever leave home without my La Prairie Eye Serum. A little bit of this before I take off and right when we land and you’d have no idea I hardly slept a wink.”

Trish Halpin, Orlando, Florida: “Packing for vacation is something I think about for days, but usually put off until about 2 hours before I need to head out. It’s not like there isn’t a Sephora, H&M, or even a Target anywhere I’d be going, but the anxiety of possibly leaving something behind drives me crazy and I end up running laps around my apartment grabbing things off a list I write on the mirror. For my trip south this week, my mirror list is filled with shorts, bathing suits, t-shirts and plenty of products to protect my fair Irish skin from the sunny rays in Central Florida. My beauty bag is stocked with sunblock, after sun care, and hair supplies, along with the bare bones basics of my daily makeup.
“My first line of defense for the Florida sun will be Murad’s Essential SPF for my face and Hampton Sun Sunblock Spray for everywhere else (30 and 35 SPF, respectively). These two products protect my skin and do little in the way of clogging pores. Also, they tend to last longer than typical drugstore brands, so these are always with me when I head to a sunny locale.

“Because I know that despite my best efforts and constant spraying (I will get a little too much sun waiting on line in the Happiest Place on Earth), Korres Yoghurt Cooling Gel will be coming along for the trip. I was turned on to Korres and their after-sun products one Memorial Day Weekend when my generally fair and freckled complexion was closer to the shade of a tomato. I was told to keep the products in the fridge and to this day, that’s where the tubes stay, whether it’s at home or at the hotel.

“In order to keep moisturized after drying out my skin from the chlorine pools, I use Royal Apothic hand cream. Kiehl’s Lip Balm is something that I carry in my handbag everyday, but when I switch to a smaller crossbody for Disney and will only be carrying essentials, the cranberry balm will make the cut. It’s perfect to keep my lips from drying out on the flight, and great to keep them moist while flirting with the various Prince Charmings (yes, I will flirt with all of them).
I have every intention of keeping my ginger mane flowing free
“While I have every intention of keeping my ginger mane flowing free, Florida is hot and humid, and I will end up with a top knot or braids after about 10 minutes outside, which is why I’ll also be packing How to Be A Redhead‘s ginger hued bobby pins for when the frizzies decide to make my life difficult. These pins come in three shades of red, so I’ll be able to give Ariel a run for Best Redhead in the Magic Kingdom.
“Last in my bag, but certainly not needed any less are my daily beauty basics. While I’m foregoing bold lips for the long weekend, I absolutely won’t be stepping foot out of the hotel without my Bardott inspired winged eyeliner and lush lashes, with faked sunkissed cheeks. Also, since I constantly reapply sunblock through the day, I don’t give the sun any chance to add a bit of color to my face, so a swipe or two of Urban Decay’s Bronzer keeps me looking like I got some color without ruining my skin.
