Directv Sales Down, Dish-TV Sales Up

The two major home satellite services each issued investor forecasts Monday, with Hughes Electronics’ DirecTV saying that it expects to add 175,000 subscribers for the quarter and EchoStar Communications’ DISH TV saying it has already added a million new subscribers during the past seven months and expects to wind up with 1.7 million new customers this year. The figure from DirecTV was 50 percent lower than earlier forecasts. CEO Jack Shaw told analysts that “our performance is not satisfactory and is unacceptable to ourselves and to all Hughes shareholders.” He said that company execs had been distracted by merger negotiations with Rupert Murdoch‘s News Corp.
