In this week’s installment of everyone’s favorite singing competition, the top eight contenders on American Idol each took the stage and belted out a song that inspired them in some way. The result? A night filled with powerful performances and yes, even a few surprising turns of the tide.
Here are some of the highlights:

Most Inspired:
Jason Castro stole the hearts of the crowd with his amazing performance of Israel “Iz” Kamakawiwo’ole’s “Over the Rainbow,” (after which Randy Jackson declared “Jason Castro is back!”). David Archuleta chose “Angels” by Robbie Williams and between his skillful piano playing and soothing voice, Simon Cowell predicted he’ll “sail through to the next round.” But the most surprising contestant to earn the judges’ praise this week was Kristy Lee Cook. After crooning “Anyway” by Martina McBride, all three judges were in agreement that this was by far her best performance. And to her shock, Simon even declared “You look like a star tonight.” [PAGEBREAK]

On the Other Hand:
In an interesting turn of events, two of this season’s frontrunners – David Cook and Carly Smithson had the judges shaking their heads. David tried his hand at singing “Innocent” by Our Lady Peace, but unfortunately, the rocker fell a bit short in his delivery. Randy said he didn’t get it, while Simon said he didn’t like it and even called him a “teensy weensy bit pompous.” Ouch! Carly pounded out “The Show Must Go On” by Queen, but found that her vocals got a lukewarm response. Simon even called it “an angry performance”! Hopefully their past track record will keep them in the contest so they can redeem themselves next week. [PAGEBREAK]

The Guest List:
Among the screaming fans in the studio, a few celebs slipped in to cheer on their favorite idols. Sitting in the VIP section were country gal Taylor Swift, Eric McCormack and even Sinbad! And right behind the judges, sat Lacey Schwimmer (from So You Think You Can Dance) and top 24 contestant Luke Menard, who dropped in to support his old castmates.[PAGEBREAK]

Off Camera:
Wondering what the judges do when the show goes to a commercial? The truth is, they often take a quick break and go outside or just hang out at their table. But at tonight’s taping, during some breaks they actually mixed and mingled a bit with the crowd. Paula Abdul gave hugs to several people in the mosh pit and believe it or not, even Simon happily got into the game and started joking around with the fans! It’s nice to know they all have a good side!
