The journey into the Upside Down is nearing its end on Broadway. Stranger Things: The First Shadow, the acclaimed stage prequel to Netflix’s hit sci-fi series, has announced that it will play its final Broadway performance on January 3, 2027, at the Marquis Theatre.

What Is Stranger Things: The First Shadow About?
The production first opened on Broadway in 2025 and quickly became a standout theatrical event. Set three decades before the events of the television series, the play explores the origins of Henry Creel, the character who would eventually become one of the franchise’s most terrifying villains. By expanding on key elements of the Stranger Things mythology, the production offered fans a deeper look into the world of Hawkins long before Eleven and her friends faced supernatural threats.
The show earned widespread praise for its ambitious stagecraft and immersive storytelling. Its achievements were recognized at the Tony Awards, where it won four trophies, including honors for its set design, lighting design, sound design, and special effects. The production became one of the most decorated plays of its season and attracted both theatergoers and dedicated Stranger Things fans.

Directed by Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin, the play features a script by Kate Trefry, based on an original story developed by Matt and Ross Duffer, Jack Thorne, and Trefry. The creative team helped transform the popular Netflix universe into a live theatrical experience unlike anything currently on Broadway.
The Broadway closing comes shortly after the production’s original London West End staging is scheduled to conclude on December 27, 2026. While the curtain falls on both productions, Stranger Things: The First Shadow leaves behind a legacy as one of the most ambitious and visually groundbreaking adaptations of a television series ever staged.
