Despite some technical difficulties on Sunday night, Jane Fonda used her moment at the SAG Awards to inspire activism. The 87-year-old actress was honored with the prestigious SAG lifetime achievement award, and she took the opportunity to offer a message of perseverance, saying, “It’s okay to be a late bloomer as long as you don’t miss the flower show.”
“I’m a late bloomer. This is the flower show,” she added, pointing to her award. “Yeah. I love acting. We get to open people’s minds to new ideas, take them beyond what they understand of the world and help ‘em laugh when things are tough, like now.”

She urged the next generation of performers to “not lose sight of the human connection,” emphasizing that “that’s the work that we do, to be connected to one another.”
“The final thing I’ll say is, you know, there’s this idea that what we believe is so much more powerful than what we think, and the saying that, ‘I’ll believe it when I see it,’ but the reality is, when I believe it, I will see it, and I’m so grateful for this,” she continued, before becoming emotional and trailing off. “That little girl, who didn’t believe in herself… the words are kind of beyond me. So, I’m just going to have to say thank you. Thank you so much!”
