Hulu could begin testing a subscription service as soon as May 24, The Los Angeles Times reports, citing people with knowledge of the plans.
The proposal would see Hulu provide the five most recent episodes of shows free-of-charge. Viewers who want to see additional episodes, however, would pay $9.95 a month to access a broader selection via the new model, which will reportedly go by the moniker Hulu Plus.
Hulu, which is owned by News Corp., NBC Universal and Disney, said it turned an operating profit in its two most recent quarters.
Although it has generated more than $100 million in ad revenue, Hulu is feeling pressure from its owners to collect a subscription fee.
Shows on Hulu do carry commercials, but not as many as on regular television. Ultimately, notes the LAT, Hulu is expected to adopt the same commercial loads as network TV.
