What’s good for Julia Roberts might not be right for Sharon Stone.
Execs are considering Roberts paramour Benjamin Bratt (“Traffic”) to star opposite Stone in the upcoming “Basic Instinct” sequel. But Stone, who will be reprising her icepick-wielding character, Catherine Trammel, might have other ideas.
According to Daily Variety, MGM Studios, the director and producers had all expressed their support for Bratt, but Stone, who has the final say over her leading man, had yet to give her approval. Stone’s Wednesday deadline, set because Bratt has other offers pending, passed without a word from her, but sources close to the production have said that Bratt is not entirely out of the picture.
MGM declined to comment on the situation.
Bratt would play a high-powered New York psychiatrist who treats the elusive Catherine and ends up entwined in her sociopathic snare. He is only one of several actors who have been in contention for the role, including Bruce Greenwood (“Thirteen Days”), who had to drop out when he accepted the lead in the submarine drama, “Below.”
Bratt can be seen currently in “Miss Congeniality” and in the Oscar-nominated “Traffic.” He left the popular NBC series “Law & Order” in 1999.
