‘Lost’ Season Three: Ep. 7 “Not in Portland”

And so it begins…again.

Picking up where we left off BACK IN NOVEMBER, we see Jack holding Ben’s kidney hostage until Kate and Sawyer can escape.

But first, we get a glimpse into Juliet’s past. Juliet’s sister, who at first appears to be suffering from some type of cancer, is getting injections from Juliet in the belly–and on the sly. What Juliet is actually doing is treating her sister with an unorthodox fertility experiment to try to get her pregnant—and it works. Juliet’s ex-husband Edmund, who runs the medical facility where Juliet works, finds out about Juliet’s secret research and wants in on the action. He thinks they can make a ton of money. He also seems to have some kind of mind control over Juliet. Could Juliet’s issues with Ben stem from her troubled relationship with Edmund?

And it gets weirder for Juliet. Approached by a cutting-edge fertility research facility in “Portland, Oregon,” one of their representatives, Mr. Albert, wants Juliet to come work for them. They know all about her research—including the fact she got a male mouse and her uncultivable sister pregnant. Juliet, however, declines, saying her ex-husband would never let her go. Mr. Albert says maybe they could talk to him, but she says it would only happen if he got hit by a bus.

Edmund gets hit by a bus. As Juliet weeps and signs off on the death warrant in the autopsy room, Mr. Albert and Ethan—that’s right, THE Ethan, who did similar experiments on Claire way back when—show up, deny having anything to do with Edmund’s “accident,” and reiterate their offer to Juliet. She asks if her sister can go with them, but Mr. Albert says he doesn’t think she would get the proper care there. “Why?” Juliet asks. “Portland has clinics.” Mr. Albert explains the facility is not actually IN Portland. “We are a little more remote than that,” he explains. Ah, the Dhrama Initiative.

Back in the operating room, Jack is adamant about letting Ben die unless Kate and Sawyer are let go. Juliet suddenly orders someone to go get them–and possibly kill them if they have to. That sets Jack off, and like a third-grader, points his finger at Juliet, telling Tom and the others SHE told him to kill Ben and make it look like an accident. A confused Tom orders Juliet out of the operating room. But Ben wakes up mid-surgery (there is no official anesthesiologist, remember?) and asks for Juliet to come back into the room. He’s overheard a bit of their conversation and insists he and Juliet need to have a chat–alone.

Juliet speaks with Ben, but we can’t hear what’s being said. She comes out of the operating room and tells Jack he has to finish the surgery and let Ben live because she is going to help his friends escape.

Meanwhile, Rousseau’s daughter Alex helps Sawyer and Kate escape from the Pickett and some gun-toting Others. Alex says she has a boat, but they have to help her free her boyfriend Carl first (that guy who was in the cage next to Sawyer in the beginning of the season). They show up at yet another concrete building, burst in, and find Carl in a Clockwork Orange-type brainwashing room, with Carl strapped to a chair, his eyes propped open, images flashing on a screen with loud music. Seriously, who the hell ARE these people?

So they finally get to the beach and onto the boat–and Pickett shows up, guns blazing. But out from the jungle comes Juliet and BANG–she shoots Pickett dead. What happened to the timid woman we saw in her flashback? She has no problems killing now. Juliet tells Kate and Sawyer to go with Carl, but Alex has to stay because of her dad. “If he wakes up and you’re not here, you know what will happen.” Wait, if Ben is Alex’s dad, that means Ben and Rousseau hooked up? We shudder at the thought.

Back in camp surgery, Jack is trying to patch Ben up but something goes wrong and he nicks an artery. Tom is forced to help. Suddenly, Kate calls in on the walkie talkie and tells Jack they are safe and about to leave on the boat. There’s lots of crying complete with very touching, soft music. You know. But the last thing Jack says to Kate is not to come back for him, NO MATTER WHAT. Yeah, right–because Kate always follows directions.

Jack finishes the job on Ben, and as he is recovering, Jack asks Juliet what Ben said to get her to change her mind. She said she has been on the island for three and half years, and he told her she could go home. Ben promised the same thing to Jack, too, if Jack operated on his fat tumor. Will Ben make good on his word?
