John Oliver: The Internet is ‘Killing’ ‘Community’

Community John Oliver Joel McHaleThank E Pluribus Anus that Community still has a chance of being renewed (fingers crossed), because we like our Greendale Seven nice and cozy. And considering recurring character Professor Ian Duncan is worth his salt (preferably around the rim of a margarita glass), his case for keeping the show and his explanation for why it’s in this perilous position is worth taking into consideration.

Duncan’s real-life counterpart, comedian John Oliver (The Daily Show), explained the problem when Hollywood.com caught up with him on the red carpet at the Comedy Awards in New York on April 28. Oliver wasn’t shy about placing blame should the series experience the cold hand of cancellation. “I cannot tell you how many people I have coming up to me all the time telling me how much they love Community [and add], ‘Oh, but I don’t have a TV though,'” said the English funnyman. Well, Internet, it’s your fault. Oliver noted that many of the show’s fans watch Community on the web instead of when it airs, leading him to end his musings with a morbid conclusion, “That’s the problem … unfortunately, that is the thing that is killing it.”

But the comedian didn’t just place blame and dash. He made sure to explain why the series’ undetermined fate is so vexing: Namely, the loss of Chevy Chase’s weekly presence. “With Chevy, you get the spectrum of humanity,” Oliver said, adding, “It is an experience being around Senor Chase, but he still delivers. If [Community] can’t get renewed because their show is amazing, they should at least get renewed to see what fireworks [with Chevy] take place onset and offset.”

But what about Professor Duncan? Will we see his triumphant (and likely boozy) return anytime soon? If Oliver has it his way, the answer is a resounding “Yes.” (Listen up, Dan Harmon!) That is, if the NBC series gets a fourth season pickup. “Personally I would like it to get picked up because I want to be on again and personally I want it to get picked up because I want to see it again. They have a lot of ideas that would be a real shame if they never got put to air,” Oliver said.
