The large populous fascinated with anything that Natalie Portman does will be intrigued by this offbeat new television project. ABC ordered a pilot of an adaptation of the Judith Krantz novel Scruples, a project Portman is co-executive producing along with Krantz’s son Tony. Although the fact that Portman will not be appearing in the series is a bit of a downer, it’s encouraging to see her take to more behind-the-scenes roles (the actress joined the production team behind three of her more recent films: No Strings Attached, Hesher and The Other Woman).
Scruples, which was already developed into a three-episode miniseries in 1980, focuses on a young woman, Wilhelmina (played by Lindsay Wagner in the miniseries), with an unhappy upbringing who reconstructs her identity in order to launch herself into a fresh, happy life. Wilhelmina-turned-Billy rides out a series of growing experiences—attending college, approaching a romantic life for the first time, and, eventually, developing a luxury Beverly Hills botique named “Scruples.” The story also envelops Billy’s eventual romantic interest, filmmaker Vito (played by Nick Mancuso in the miniseries) as well as two rising fashion icons: Valentine and Spider (portrayed by Marie-France Pisier and Barry Bostwick in the miniseries).
