On one hand, this is more Zach Galifianakis on television. Which is always a good thing. However on the other hand, it’s not just (or even mostly) Zach, it’s Brody Stevens. And it’s a mocumentary — a filmmaking crutch that is getting a little overused. On the other other hand, it’s on HBO which means a lot of swearing and boobs. On the other other other hand, gloves would be a fantastic gift for me this year.
Galifianakis and Stevens have worked together in the past and regularly perform stand-up together. Stevens was a former minor league baseball player, though there is no indication this show will be in anyway sports related. And Stevens is a decent stand-up, but not the best. I really like Galifianakis and his style, but when it is completely unhinged on TV it doesn’t really work. He works best as a part of a larger group where his weirdness can bounce off others. How well this will translate coming out of another comic’s voice remains to be seen. Nevertheless, I’m more excited about this than most of the shit NBC is putting up, so it’s got that going for it.
