News groups go to bat for jailed writer

Several leading news organizations, including CBS News and NBC have filed a motion demanding access to a closed hearing, scheduled for Wednesday, in the case of writer Vanessa Leggett, who was jailed for refusing to turn over to a federal grand jury her notes and tapes of interviews with Roger Angleton, an accused murderer. Leggett cited her rights under the First Amendment, but federal prosecutors maintained that she is not protected under the reporters’ “shield” law since she is not a reporter.
