The first trailer has been released for Power Ballad, the upcoming comedy from filmmaker John Carney, offering an early glimpse at the unlikely musical partnership between Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas.
Known for music-driven films such as Sing Street and Once, Carney returns with another story centered on ambition, friendship, and the transformative power of music.
Power Ballad: The Plot, Trailer & Everything We Know So Far
In Power Ballad, Rudd plays Rick, a once-promising wedding singer whose career never quite took off. While performing at a gig, Rick crosses paths with Danny (Jonas), a former boy-band heartthrob struggling to stay relevant in the music industry.
The two musicians connect during a late-night jam session, bonding over their shared love of songwriting. But the partnership soon becomes complicated when Danny turns one of Rick’s songs into a massive hit. This is a success that reignites Danny’s fading career while leaving Rick feeling overlooked.
Determined to reclaim the credit he believes he deserves, Rick sets out to prove the song was truly his creation, even if the pursuit risks friendships, reputation, and the fragile sense of stability he’s built. Watch the official trailer below.
Alongside Rudd and Jonas, the film’s ensemble cast includes Peter McDonald, Marcella Plunkett, Havana Rose Liu, Jack Reynor and more. Carney directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with McDonald. The project was produced by Anthony Bregman, Carney, Peter Cron, Rebecca O’Flanagan, and Robert Walpole.
The film recently premiered at the Dublin International Film Festival and is set to screen next at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin.
Power Ballad is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 5.
