Vincent Young, chairman of Young Broadcasting, who became the first
owner of a major NBC affiliate to drop its affiliation rather than pay
“reverse compensation,” is now talking to the network about buying the
San Francisco station from him, according to Electronic Media.
The trade publication said Tuesday that Young is asking NBC to pay
him $800 million for KRON-TV — roughly what he spent to acquire it more
than a year ago. However, since KRON-TV is due to drop its affiliation
on Jan. 1, NBC reportedly wants to value it as an independent, making it
worth (by their reckoning) $400 million. NBC has signed a deal to switch
its affiliation in the Bay Area to Granite Broadcasting’s KBWB-TV
beginning Jan. 1.
