Dan Rather acknowledged on Thursday that the U.S. media failed to explain
the growing hatred of America by certain fanatical religious groups overseas
and warn the public about the threat that they posed.
He said that the media
could have done a better job of reporting “on the warnings that were given
by any number of people in and around our own government going back as far
as the late 1980s.”
He added: “I do not exempt myself in this criticism, nor
do I exempt CBS News.”
Besides anchoring CBS Evening News, Rather is
also the program’s managing editor. He said that the events since Sept. 11
have made the media “aware of some of our shortcomings and I think we will
now do better in reporting these areas.”
