Studios downsize premiere parties

Those who expect to attend a sophisticated and extravagant movie premiere will soon realize that movie studios are keeping the festivities rather humble.

The days of fancy, over-the-top studio premieres are over as studios attempt to be sensitive to the Sept. 11 attacks.

Warner Brothers has downsized its Nov. 4 London premiere of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Reuters reported. Once planned as a gala post-screening celebration, a simple dinner for the cast will now follow the screening instead.

New Line will still hold its premiere of Lord of the Rings on Dec. 10 at the Odeon Theatre in Leicester Square in London, and will end with a party at the Docklands near the Tower of London. In the U.S. however, the premiere won’t be as grandiose, if it happens at all.

Warner Bros.’ Ocean’s Eleven, originally set to premiere with Rat Pack fanfare at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, will have its screening and party in Los Angeles instead. Details have yet to be finalized.

Recently, Fox’s From Hell and Universal’s K-Pax premieres have consisted of red-carpet arrivals, screenings and intimate dinners for the cast, a trend many believe other movie studios will adopt.
