The chance of winning a shiny trophy isn’t necessarily what always draws the stars to the Golden Globes ceremony. Nor is it the chance to possibly see Jim Carrey talk out of his rear end.
In many cases, it’s the fine grub. And this year’s ceremony is no exception. At the Oscars, the stars have to wait until after the ceremony to fill their bellies. But at the Globes, they eat during the ceremony — which makes acceptance speeches very interesting if someone like Kevin Spacey or Julianne Moore has a piece of cilantro stuck between his/her teeth.
The Globes ceremony is a fiesta in and of itself, with multiple entrees on the menu and an open bar. (Now you know why Jack Nicholson didn’t mind whippersnapper Matt Damon getting a better seat, and telling everyone so on live TV.
So what exactly will Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep dine on when you’re stuck eating leftover meatloaf in front of the boob tube? Actually, their lean cuisine isn’t as outrageous as you might think.
Here’s what’s on the menu.
They’ll start with a traditional salad, which includes the usual greens, mushrooms, mini-lobsters (3 to be exact) and something called “edible flowers.” Given the length of the telecast (three hours), one can expect the appetizer to last a good half-hour to forty-five minutes.
The entrees follow with the drinks flowing at the no-host bar. It’s a typical selection: mixed grill, a “medallion” (the banquet catch phrase) of beef and grilled chicken. Adding color to the fare is the Beverly Hills Hilton’s inclusion of “purple potatoes.”
As the stars begin to make their mad dash for the restrooms toward the end of the ceremony, the dessert should be on their way out. This year’s creme de la creme is a lemon souffle, served with white chocolate cylinder and topped with berries and garnished with the requisite chocolate movie strip — emblazoned with the words: “57th Golden Globe Awards.”
Cheap? Maybe. Filling? Even for movie stars.
Here’s a complete rundown of the menu. Lucky for them, no cilantro.
