The Wizard of Oz at the Sphere Will Smell as Magical as It Looks

Dorothy’s yellow brick road is getting a sensory upgrade. Beginning August 28, the Las Vegas Sphere will debut a reimagined version of The Wizard of Oz—one that engages not just sight and sound, but smell. In a groundbreaking twist, audience members will inhale signature scents tied to iconic scenes from the beloved 1939 film.

Wizard of Oz Sphere: Tornado Dust, Poppies, and Hidden Surprises

Confirmed aromas include the earthy gust of the tornado that whisks Dorothy into Oz and the sweet, sleep-inducing poppy field planted by the Wicked Witch of the West. Sphere Entertainment president Jennifer Koester also hinted that additional “smell-o-vision” effects may appear during key Technicolor transitions and in the flower-filled landscapes of Munchkinland.

This multisensory approach goes beyond the Sphere’s other cutting-edge features—like haptic seats and AI-enhanced visuals—by tapping into the brain’s emotional core. Because scent is directly linked to memory and emotion, these olfactory moments are expected to leave a lasting impression.
